LOT Polish Airlines Travel/Flight Information - 29/08/2010
LOT Polish Airlines offers a range of direct flights from UK airports to Polish destinations, including Warsaw. It is the national flag-carrying airline of Poland and is based at Frederic Chopin Airport in Warsaw, the biggest airport in the country.
The airline traces its origins back to 1929, the year its operations first began. Prior to that, air travel in Poland had been operated by various privately-owned companies, but the government issued a decree shutting them all down and laying the foundations for LOT in 1928.

LOT, which means flight in Polish, launched a competition to design a logo in its inaugural year and also quickly added the adjective Polish after its name. The logo-design competition was won by Tadeusz Gronowski, a graphic artist from Warsaw. His design, representing a flying crane, still looks strikingly modern on the tails of the LOT aircraft where it is used to this day. With its new identity created, LOT grew quickly, being recognised by the International Air Transport Association in 1930 and operating an experimental flight to the US, carrying only LOT staff, in 1938. In 1939, Hitler's invasion of Poland, which began the Second World War, put a stop to LOT's operations for the next seven years. Most of the company's aircraft were interned in Romania and all their hangers and airport buildings were destroyed in the conflict. Following the liberation of Poland, the country's government decided to rebuild LOT almost from scratch and gave it several ex-airforce planes to kick-start its redevelopment.
Soon the airline was growing quickly again, acquiring nine US-built Douglas DC-3s in 1946 and various Soviet made Illyshin planes several years later. The realities of the cold war meant that LOT would fly mostly Soviet-built aircraft until 1989. LOT expanded its network of European destinations and in 1955 announced that it had carried its millionth passenger. In the early 60s it began operating flights to the Middle East.
The airline launched the first flights from Warsaw to New York in the early 70s and also began operations to several Far Eastern airports including Bangkok and Mumbai.
Today LOT offers a great range of direct flights from London Heathrow Airport and Manchester Airport to Warsaw, as well as flights to Warsaw from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast Airports, in association with partner airlines.
Aside from its direct flights to and from the UK, the airline has an extensive flight network covering destinations in the US, Canada, the Middle East and across Europe, as well as internal flights within Poland.

Today, it operates nearly 50 aircraft, mostly Boeings and Embraers, to 50 destinations worldwide. Daily departures for LOT reach 226 and each year some 3.9 million people fly with the carrier.
As a member of the prestigious Star Alliance since October 2003, the world's largest airline alliance which includes renowned airlines such as Air Canada and Lufthansa, booking a flight with LOT connects you to a global network serving more than 842 airports in 152 countries.
Being a member of Star Alliance not only allows LOT to offer its customers an even greater range of cheap flights and convenient flight connections, but means that passengers are able to take part in a loyalty card scheme which offers rewards for flights taken with any alliance members.
The Miles and More scheme allows passengers to earn rewards on flights with all Star Alliance partners, as well as a range of other LOT airline partners. These can be used to buy future airfares and reduce the cost of flights, making that airfare go even further.
LOT has a great reputation as a quality airline around the world and has won numerous accolades over the years, including being voted the Best Airline in Eastern Europe by British Business Traveller magazine for eight years in a row between 1998 and 2005.
Passengers have awarded three prizes to LOT Polish Airlines in the Pasazer.com and Krakow Airport best airline poll in 2010. The airline was recognised in the traditional, charter and business airline categories. LOT has also received accolades from Business Travelr USA magazine and the OAG Airline Industry Awards.

Polish pilots are recognised as some of the best in the world and LOT employs some of the top award-winning pilots in the country. The airline maintains an extensive and modern fleet for its flights, which now includes US-made Boeings, Brazilian-made Embraers and ATRs, which are manufactured in France and Italy.

Passengers can save time at the airport by using the airline's tele check-in service, which is available for flights from all airports in Poland and allows travellers to drop their baggage at the desk and simply collect their boarding pass.
LOT's high-quality service continues on board the flight, with a choice of business or economy class airfares for passengers.
A friendly and professional team of cabin crew will ensure passenger's comfort and safety throughout the flight, serving a delicious complimentary meal on international flights.
On board, business class fliers will be treated to a menu featuring signature dishes by Polish chef Robert Sowa of Hotel Jan III Sobieski in Warsaw.
